Prepare Your Space
Choose a clear area where you can stand without needing to step around furniture. Place a stable chair nearby if you would like support. Wear comfortable clothing and keep each movement smooth rather than trying to reach a particular position.
The Five-Minute Sequence
Minute 1: Breathing and Shoulder Rolls
Stand tall with the feet at a comfortable width. Let the arms rest by the sides. Take three unhurried breaths, then roll the shoulders gently back and down. Use a small circle first and make it slightly larger only if that remains comfortable.
Minute 2: Easy Side Bends
Keep both feet grounded. Slide one hand a short way down the outside of the leg while the opposite side lengthens. Return to the centre before changing sides. Avoid twisting or leaning forward.
Minute 3: Gentle Hip Hinges
Place the hands on the upper thighs. Soften the knees and send the hips slightly back while keeping the spine long. Return to standing by pressing the feet into the floor. Use a small range and repeat slowly.
Minute 4: Supported Calf Stretches
Face a wall or the back of a stable chair. Step one foot back, keep the heel comfortably toward the floor, and bend the front knee slightly. Hold for two steady breaths, then change sides.
Minute 5: Reach, Reset, and Stand Tall
Reach the arms forward and then, if comfortable, a little higher. Lower them slowly. Finish with a gentle turn of the head to each side and one final steady breath.
Helpful Tip
Link the routine to an existing cue such as opening the curtains or waiting for the kettle. A reliable cue can make a short routine easier to remember.
Stretching After a Walk
After an easy walk, use four simple moves: a supported calf stretch, a gentle front-of-thigh stretch while holding a chair if appropriate, a small standing hip hinge, and two shoulder rolls. Hold each position only while the breath stays easy.
Keep It Comfortable
Work within a range that feels steady and controlled. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness, or pronounced discomfort. Ask a qualified healthcare professional for individual guidance when you are unsure whether a movement suits you.
